The CIA, Cuba and Operation Peter Pan

by Saul Landau and Nelson P. Valdes, Counterpunch

[Background note by Tom Whitney: As U.S.-sponsored terror and military incursions mounted against Cuba's new revolutionary government, a team made up of a Miami-area Catholic priest, CIA and U.S. State Department representatives, and rightwing Cubans set the stage for the removal to Florida between 1960 and 1962 of 14,000 Cuban children, age 5-18. Under Operation Peter Pan, as it was called, parents remained in Cuba. Many never saw their children again. The CIA's Radio Swan launched a fear campaign on October 26, 1960 with a fabricated announcement: "Cuban mothers, listen to this: the government's next law will take away your five to 18-year-old children. Cuban mothers, do not let your children be taken." The conspirators reproduced and distributed copies of a fake law transferring parental custody of children to the state.]
